A 50-year-old quack was arrested on Wednesday for giving prescriptions and treatment to patients in his ‘clinic-cum-pharmacy’ in Vishamangalam village near Tirupattur town.

Health officials said the arrested quack was identified as D. Anbarasu, a native of Jothimangalam village that comes under Tirupattur taluk in the district. He has completed Class XII. Initial inquiry revealed that he was allegedly offering medical treatment to patients in the village for the past few years without the necessary qualifications. He had converted his rented house into a clinic and pharmacy in the remote hamlet.

As health officials suspected his activities after several complaints from residents, a special medical team led by K. Sivakumar, Medical Officer, Government Taluk Hospital (Tirupattur), conducted a surprise check in the house and sealed the clinic and the pharmacy. The team also seized medical equipment. A case was registered by Tirupattur Taluk police, and Anbarasu was lodged at a sub-jail in Tirupattur town. Further probe is under way.
