A total of 458 motorists were booked for drunk driving across Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri commissionerates during special enforcement drives conducted over the past week.

Hyderabad traffic police recorded the highest number of cases, booking 281 motorists during a two-day special drive conducted on June 12 and 13. Cyberabad traffic police, meanwhile, booked 53 motorists during a weekend special enforcement drive. In Malkajgiri commissionerate, traffic police booked 124 motorists for drunk driving during a week-long enforcement campaign conducted between June 7 and 13.

Traffic police across the three commissionerates said all offenders would be produced before the courts.

In Cyberabad, 210 drunk driving cases were disposed of by courts between June 8 and 13. Of these, eight offenders were ordered to perform social service in addition to paying fines, while 202 were fined. No offender was awarded a jail sentence during the period.

Similarly, courts disposed of 175 drunk driving cases in Malkajgiri between June 7 and 13. One offender was directed to undertake social service along with paying a fine, while the remaining 174 offenders were fined.

The police cautioned that any person found driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a fatal road accident could be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.
