At least 14 children were hospitalised after reportedly consuming shawarma purchased from a hotel at Pallikara, Puchakkad, Kannur, Kerala, on Monday (September 9, 2025) night.

After the children suffered from vomiting, stomach pain, and body aches, they were admitted to a private hospital at Kanhangad the same night.

The incident occurred during a private service as part of Prophet’s Day celebrations at Puchakkad mosque. As the food prepared on the mosque premises was insufficient, additional shawarma was sourced from a nearby hotel. Allegations later emerged that stale shawarma was served, leading to health issues among the attendees.

Clash outside hotel

Following the complaints, a public uproar broke out in front of the hotel, resulting in a minor clash.

The Bekal police arrived at the scene and later visited the hospital for further inquiry.

Four children – all residents of Puchakkad – remain under treatment, while the others were discharged after receiving primary care.

Though the Health department has initiated an investigation into the matter, the police have so far not registered any case.
