Shankarapura Police have detained a 17-year-old pre-university student for allegedly impregnating a 15-year-old girl.
The incident came to light when the girl gave birth to a baby in the washroom of her residence in West Bengaluru on Wednesday. The victim’s mother took the newborn to the hospital, where the doctors declared that the infant was dead and subsequently informed the police.
A senior police officer said that the boy, a resident of Shankarapura in South Bengaluru, was detained on Thursday under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was produced before the court and sent to a boys’ remand home.
“We got him counselled in NIMHANS. He will be writing his midterm PUC exam tomorrow,” a police official told The Hindu. “Parents were unaware that the girl was pregnant. They took the baby to the hospital as soon as the delivery happened,” the officer said.
