Outer Ring Road (ORR) is a developing area that continues to face issues related to roads and storm-water drains, but these problems are now in their final stages of resolution, said M. Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner, Greater Bengaluru Authority(GBA).
“My predecessor, Tushar Giri Nath sir, has already taken the necessary measures to address the issues in that area. All those works are on the verge of completion,” Mr. Rao said, adding that citizens should cooperate until the works are completed.
Mr. Rao made these remarks in the context of a letter sent by the Individual Tax Payers Forum (ITPF) from Varthur, Panathur, and Balagere, a citizens’ group representing income tax payers, to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The letter accused civic agencies of carrying out “unscientific, incomplete, and poorly coordinated” white-topping and drainage works, which have led to severe flooding and disruption of traffic and daily life.
Mr. Rao said he had not received any information about such complaints so far, but added that citizens were welcome to raise their concerns, which would be examined in detail.
“Potholes are bound to appear during heavy rains, but we are taking prompt action to fix them. During the monsoon, problems can arise even when quality work is done,” Mr. Rao said.
At a meeting with all chief engineers, Mr. Rao directed them to prioritise pothole repairs along ORR. He instructed that similar measures be taken on arterial, sub-arterial, and ward-level roads to ensure safe and smooth commuting.
He also directed that ongoing white-topping works be maintained in good condition to facilitate smooth vehicle movement, and that contractors responsible for these projects ensure their regular upkeep.
“Drainage pipes installed along flyovers to divert rainwater have deteriorated in several locations, resulting in water falling directly onto the roads and causing damage,” Mr. Rao told the engineers. He instructed them to inspect and replace the damaged pipes immediately.
