MLA for Bhadravathi B.K. Sangameshwara, belonging to the Congress, said that he wishes to be a Muslim in his next birth during an Id Milad procession here on Monday.

After being felicitated by the organisers of the Id Milad celebrations, the MLA stated that he, his family members, and the Congress party had always been supportive of people belonging to the Muslim community. “Leaders of the Congress and I have always responded to your causes. The party has always been with you. I wish you would take part in the procession singing praises to Allah. Let there be peace in the town,” he stated.

“I will remain Sabara Sanganna. If I were to be born again, I wish to be a Muslim,” Mr. Sangameshwara said.

A video clip of his speech has gone viral. Leaders of the BJP have criticised him, terming his statement an act to appease Muslims. MLA for Shivamogga S.N. Channabasappa, belonging to the BJP, said that Mr. Sangameshwara would not have a rebirth. “The Almighty will not bless those who oppose the Hindu religion with rebirth,” he said.
