Congress’ Sriperumbudhur MLA K. Selvaperunthagai, VCK MLA S.S. Balaj, CPI (M) MLA V.P., Nagaimaali, PMK MLA G.K. Mani, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi MLA, Prof. M.H. Jawahirullah, CPI MLA T. Ramachandran, Tamilaga Valvurimai Katchi leader T. Velmurugan were critical of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam founder Vijay and his cadre while BJP MLA Nainar Nagenthran was critical of the State Government in the Karur stampede case.

Mr. Selvaperunthagai urged the Chief Minister to appeal against the Supreme Court’s interim order that has said that ‘IPS officers who are not natives of Tamil Nadu’ should be a part of the three-member supervisory committee headed by retired Justice Ajay Rastogi.

Praising the Chief Minister Stalin for his swift action in the aftermath of the tragedy, VCK MLA Balaji said that this was a ‘classic case of a stampede’. “Be it Kumbh Mela or the recent stampede in Bengaluru (after RCB IPL teams victory), stampede occurs when people who are unknown to each other congregate in the place for a common reason. In a political party rally, such an incident wouldn’t have happened. People didn’t come together for a political reason or a cause, they came to see a person,” he said.

Tamilaga Valvurimai Katchi founder T. Velmurugan said that it was due to Chief Minister Stalin’s considerate approach towards TVK founder Vijay that has resulted in such an incident and added that State government should have imposed restrictions on the crowd much earlier.

BJP MLA and State president Nainar Nagenthran staged a walkout.
