Karnataka will create a dedicated data centre park at Tavarekere, an industrial area bordering Hoskote and Kolar, to cater to the huge data centre infrastructure requirement in the State.
Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) has already notified and would soon be acquiring 1,000 acres of land in Tavarekere, (some 46 km away from the central business area of Bengaluru), and 250 to 300 acres of this land parcel would be used to build a dedicated data centre park infrastructure for enterprises to set up their individual data centres, Sharath Bache Gowda, Chairman, KEONICS told The Hindu on Wednesday.
Hub-and-spoke model
“This will be a very large data centre infrastructure in the State in the scale of high MW to GW capacity. The idea is to create a hub and spoke model with a GW data centre connecting several edge data centres in emerging cities in the State,” he elaborated.
The data centre park would be ready within 18 to 24 months and the idea was to link the GW/hyper scale facility with smaller 25 to 30 MW several such data centres across Mysuru, Hubballi, Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Davanagere to ensure seamless data storage and data safety, said Mr. Gowda.
“Data centre is a very critical infrastructure for a digital economy. It is like how you have roads, flyovers, ports and canals for connectivity and logistics. It is the neural networks that support network connectivity for the state and beyond,” he elaborated.
Huge demand
When asked who all would be the tenants at the upcoming data centre park, Mr. Gowda said that there was huge demand for such dedicated data centre infrastructure in the State from domestic and international players. “Secretaries of IT and Industries are also working on this project,” he informed.
Earlier speaking at a Data Centre Summit organised by India Green Building Council, a part of the Confederation of Indian Industry, he said, “Our vision is to make Karnataka a hub for data innovation, extending leadership beyond Bengaluru for regional parity and supporting hyperscale and edge data centres across the State.”
Where Karnataka stands
According to industry experts, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are quite ahead of Karnataka in terms of data centre infrastructure. “Karnataka, being a huge data-heavy state with all its IT prowess and knowledge ecosystem, should significantly beef up its data storage and management capabilities by creating huge green data centres faciilities,” said an industry observer, who did not want to be named.
