A 27-year-old woman killed her twin toddlers before ending her life at her residence in Balanagar in the early hours of Tuesday (October 14, 2025).

The deceased, identified as Challari Sailakshmi, was the mother of two-year-old twins, Chetan Karthikeya and Lasyata Valli.

According to the police, the incident was reported around 4 a.m. on Tuesday when her husband Anil Kumar was away at work.

“Chetan had a speech impairment, and the family had been taking him for regular speech therapy sessions. Disagreements arose between Sailakshmi and her husband over the child’s condition and the family had frequent quarrels,” explained Balanagar Inspector T. Narsimha Raju.

Preliminary examination revealed that Sailakshmi smothered the twins before jumping from the fourth floor (terrace) of her apartment. Alerted by the neighbours, the Balanagar police rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies to Gandhi Hospital for postmortem examination.

Following a complaint by the woman’s parents, a case was booked and Kumar was taken into custody. Further investigation is underway.
