Workshop on astronomy in Vijayapura college

A one-day technical workshop on “Challenges and Opportunities of Radio Astronomy” was organized for students at SECAB Institute of Engineering and Technology College in Vijayapura recently.

Abdul Khader Patewale, an electronics engineer at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, inaugurated the workshop.

Astronomy has attracted scholars around the world since ancient times. A large number of scholars worked hard for years and contributed to the field in medieval times. However, during the modern times, an astronomy textbook written in 1971 has given a new impetus to the field in India, he said.

In the middle ages, many scientists used to predict astronomical events like solar eclipses based on their memory and experience. However, due to the lack of accurate measurement of time, at times, these predictions went wrong. These challenges inspired new scientific studies. The field is very important to understand our planets, the vast sky and other celestial bodies, he said.

He urged engineering students to explore the space and consider astronomy as a field of serious study.
