Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan on Saturday said only a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe would reveal the truth behind the stampede that occurred in Karur on September 27 during a during a rally by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay. The incident claimed the lives of 41 people.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Mr. Vasan said there were several questions regarding the incident and only an investigation by the Central agency would uncover the truth. He alleged that the ruling party and its allies were attempting to politicise the issue.
Mr. Vasan also expressed concern over repeated instances of attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, which have led to distress among coastal communities. “Such incidents should be brought to an end. Both the Central and State governments should hold talks with the Sri Lankan government to find a lasting and peaceful solution,” he said.
He alleged that under DMK rule, law and order in Tamil Nadu had deteriorated, and crimes against women and children as well as cybercrimes had been on the rise. Mr. Vasan also expressed confidence that the National Democratic Alliance, led by the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, would unseat the DMK from power in the 2026 Assembly election.
