The Chhattisgarh State Women’s Commission (CSWC) has written to the State police chief to file an FIR against a bunch of Bajrang Dal members for allegedly molesting and abusing three tribal women from Narayanpur at Durg railway station this July.
These women – purported victims of the human trafficking case in which two nuns from Kerala and a Narayanpur resident were arrested by the Chhattisgarh police — had approached the State Women’s Commission seeking action against Bajrang Dal members and maintained that the nuns were innocent.
The commission’s chief and Congress leader Kiranmayee Nayak confirmed to The Hindu that the letter had been sent to the Director General of Police Arun Dev Gautam on Thursday with the directions that the FIR be filed within 15 days.
FIR within 15 days
“In this letter, we have directed to register separate FIRs for all applicants within 15 days and submit a report to the commission within 15 days. If the DGP fails to register an FIR and submit a report within 15 days, the commission will send a letter to the National Human Rights Commission to secure compensation for the applicants from the police administration in all three cases,” Ms. Nayak said.
An FIR of human trafficking and forcible religious conversions had been registered against the nuns and a Narayanpur resident based on a complaint by a Bajrang Dal member. Currently, the nuns are on bail.
Three cases
The women’s panel chief added that during the hearing before the commission, cases were filed by three applicants from Narayanpur district, alleging that three Bajrang Dal workers assaulted, abused, molested, and used casteist slurs at Durg railway station.
“The police were not registering an FIR in this case. Subsequently, the applicants approached the women’s commission with their complaint. Three consecutive hearings have been held, but the respondents remained absent from the commission despite being informed,” said Ms. Nayak.
