A 35-year-old welder was hacked to death by a gang at Kandaneri village near Pallikonda toll plaza in Vellore on Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as S. Devathiran, a native of Reddiyur village in Vellore. He was working as a welder at construction sites in the area. He was married and has two children.

Initial inquiry revealed that Devathiran and his wife Kalaivani, 30, were living separately for the past few years due to personal differences. Kalaivani was living in her mother’s house in Ranipet while the deceased was living with his mother in his native village.

On Wednesday night, Devathiran left the house to meet his friends. As he did not return home for long, his mother, went in search of her son. A few farmers noticed the body of Devathiran in a pool of blood at a mango grove at Kandaneri village.

Based on an alert, the Pallikonda police inspected the spot. Sniffer dogs and fingerprint experts were roped in. A case was registered by the Pallikonda police. Special teams were formed to nab the suspects. Police were also analysing CCTV footage in the area.
