The patients in need of surgery at the trauma centre in Sawai Man Singh Government Hospital here were shifted to the old emergency wing on Tuesday (October 7, 2025) following a massive fire which claimed six lives on Sunday (October 5, 2025) night. Action was initiated to restart at least three of the eight operation tables installed in the trauma centre.

Trauma centre’s newly appointed in-charge B.L. Yadav said the patients requiring neurosurgery had been shifted to Bangar Bhawan on the hospital campus for immediate attention following the destruction of neuro intensive care unit (ICU) and operation theatre. “Three to four surgeries were earlier conducted everyday in the trauma centre,” Dr. Yadav said.

Only 22 ICU beds, including six in the emergency ward and 16 in the polytrauma ward, were available for the patients needing critical care after the fire incident. Dr. Yadav said since the medical equipment were damaged or completely destroyed in the fire, the hospital administration was working on a war footing to restore the trauma services.

The Rajasthan government has announced financial assistance of ₹10 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said all possible help would be extended to the families of victims who lost their lives in the incident.

While all the six deceased were admitted to the neuro ICU where the fire broke out, two patients admitted to the semi-ICU ward died after being taken out in the rescue operation at the trauma centre. The Medical & Health Department has maintained that only those who died of burns and suffocation had been included in the list of casualties.

Two of the five persons critically injured in the fire mishap were on Tuesday shifted to a ward, where they were reportedly recovering. Three patients were still admitted to an ICU in the hospital’s main building.
