The Electronics City police have arrested three men for allegedly assaulting a man and running him over with a car, dragging him for around 100 metres and causing his death in a case of road rage, after he asked the driver of the accused’s car to slow down. The fourth accused, identified as Shyam Kohar, is absconding.

The arrested have been identified as Ajay Rabidas, 26, Sajal Namasudra, 19, and Bijoy Ray, 27, all natives of Assam.

The deceased, Ranjith Kumar Sahu, hailed from Bihar, the police said. He was working as a cook at a paying guest accommodation in BTM Layout.

The incident occurred near Pragathi Nagar, within the limits of Electronics City Police Station, on the night of October 21.

According to the complaint lodged by his friend, Nitish Mukhiya, Ranjith had come to Electronics City to celebrate the Dasara festival with his friends. After the celebration, he was walking with them to his brother’s house in Pragathipura, where they planned to spend the night.

While they were crossing the road, a car allegedly approached at high speed. When Ranjith signalled to the driver to slow down, the occupants of the car reportedly became angry, took a U-turn, came back and assaulted him.

Nitish alerted his friends, who arrived at the spot. An argument broke out between the two groups, during which the accused allegedly attempted to run the group over with the car.

While the others managed to move aside, the vehicle hit Ranjith.

The accused allegedly drove over his legs and dragged him for around 100 metres before abandoning him in the middle of the Hosur service road and fleeing.

Ranjith suffered severe injuries to his head, chest, right leg and other parts of his body. He was shifted to a private hospital in Madiwala for treatment but succumbed to his injuries on October 22.

The police registered a case against unidentified persons and launched an investigation. After examining CCTV footage and recording eyewitness statements, the police arrested the three accused.

Efforts are under way to trace and arrest the absconding accused, Shyam Kohar.
