The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned an annual recurring expenditure of ₹60 crore to ensure proper cleanliness of police stations.

Approving a proposal of the Director General of Police/Head of Police Force, Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, the government issued an order granting the fund and permission to engage outsourced sanitary workers/sweepers for police stations and police units.

The DGP has been asked to follow necessary tender procedures as per the existing rules and instruct officers heading cities/districts and other units to furnish Utilisation Certificate to the police headquarters.

In his proposal, Dr. Aggarwal said since police stations were public places visited frequently by general public for redressal of their grievances, it was necessary to ensure proper cleanliness and upkeep of police stations and special unit buildings.

At present, 2,003 police stations, including 1,382 law and order and 245 All Women Police Stations, 11 range offices, 4 zonal offices, 8 commissionerates, 277 sub-divisions, 16 battalions and 20 special units were functioning without dedicated permanent sanitary workers/sweepers, the DGP said.
