Burglars decamped with 18.50 sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹5,000 in cash from the house of a police constable belonging to the Armed Reserve wing of the Tamil Nadu Police near Jolarpet town on Wednesday.

The police said that the victim, K. Chakaravarthy, 49, had taken his son to the hospital.

. When he returned, Chakravarthy found that the cupboards in the living room and bedroom were broken. Gold ornaments and cash that were kept in the cupboards were also missing. The backdoor of the house was also damaged to gain entry into the house. Kandali police inspected the spot. Sniffer dogs and fingerprint experts were roped in. CCTV cameras in the house and on the route were taken to identify suspects. A case was registered and special teams were formed to nab the suspects. A probe is under way.
