The women’s wing of an influential social organisation threw its weight behind Manipur Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam after he landed in Imphal on Friday (October 16, 2026) amid a protest demanding his resignation from Parliament.

The MP is facing sexual harassment allegations from some students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), which had dismissed him on October 9.

Members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) youth wing, took out a protest march, demanding justice for the “wronged” JNU students, and calling for accountability.

The protestors clashed with Congress workers at the main gate of the party’s State headquarters. The police controlled the situation.

The BJYM members said Mr. Akoijam should resign as an MP and let the law take its course. Congress said the BJYM march was the BJP’s attempt to divert people’s attention from the ongoing ethnic conflict that has claimed more than 310 lives since May 2023.

“The people of Manipur are with MP Bimol Akoijam. His strength is the people of Manipur. Justice will be delivered soon,” Youth Congress leader N. Popilal told journalists in Imphal.

The MP found support from the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, a conglomerate of civil society organisations in the Imphal Valley. Its women’s wing slammed the BJP for targeting Mr. Akoijam.

Expressing concern over his reported sacking, the wing demanded greater scrutiny of how the charges against him had been handled.

Mr. Akoijam vowed to challenge the actions taken against him. “My lawyers are taking time because we have to be very cautious as the institutions are so fragile now,” he said.
