The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (BCTNP) has strongly condemned the act of a 71-year-old lawyer “to hurl a shoe” at Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai during the court proceedings on Monday. It has urged the Supreme Court to initiate appropriate action against the lawyer to uphold the majesty of the judiciary.

In a message jointly signed by Bar Council of India (BCI) vice-chairman S. Prabakaran, BCTNP chariman P.S. Amalraj and vice-chairman V. Karthikeyan, the BCTNP said, the untoward incident had caused much anguish and deep pain to the members of the Bar since it was an attack on the institution and democracy itself.

Thanking the BCI for having placed the “disgruntled and unruly” lawyer under immediate suspension, the BCTNP said, it pledges its solidarity towards the judiciary and the Chief Justice of India. “The judiciary is one of the pillars of a democratic country and any insult towards such institution cannot be looked away,” the message read.
