Sudden showers in many parts of Vellore town, including the Chennai – Benguluru Highway (NH 48) and neighbouring big towns such as Ambur, Vaniyambadi, Arani, Gudiyatham, Jawadhu Hills, Chengam, Polur, and Tirupattur town has brought respite from heat on Wednesday.

Due to rain, the daily temperature recorded for Vellore on Wednesday was 32.9 degrees Celsius.

Low-lying areas such as Sampath Nagar and Kansalpet in Vellore town were waterlogged. Unscheduled power cuts were reported in these districts as showers with strong winds prevailed many areas. “A sudden downpour and cloudy skies were pleasant as the cool weather helped reduce heat in the region. It also helps increase groundwater in the town,” said G. Suman, a resident.

Of the seven taluks in Ranipet district, areas such as Arcot, Walajah, Arakkonam, and Sholinghur received light rain. In Tirupattur, towns such as Vaniyambadi, Ambur, Natrampalli, and Alangayam received sudden downpours.

Heavy rain damaged Tangedco poles and strong winds uprooted trees in these areas on Wednesday. WRD officials said that the flow of water into Palar River was steadily increasing. It would help recharge ground water to a radius of three km on both sides of the river and around 35 farming villages will be benefitted.
