Acting on complaints of bribery, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule conducted a surprise inspection at a sub-registrar’s office in Nagpur on Monday (October 6, 2025) and seized cash from the premises.

Although the registration process has been fully digitised, citizens had complained that certain officials demanded illegal payments. During the inspection, Mr. Bawankule found cash stashed in a staff member’s desk.

“We are committed to rooting out corruption and ensuring transparency in government operations. I urge citizens to come forward and report any such misconduct without hesitation,” Mr. Bawankule said.

The Minister said the State government had zero tolerance towards corruption and assured strict action.

The law enforcement authorities have begun an investigation into the complaints of corruption.

The government employee, from whose desk the money was recovered, denied allegations of bribery and insisted that the amount, around ₹5,000, belonged to him.

The inspection came amid the State government’s 150-day programme aimed at transforming administrative systems.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced that all government services would be integrated into a single digital platform.

“My focus is more on e-governance. In my last 10 years, we brought many services online, but now I want end-to-end digital governance. If anyone needs anything from the government, they shouldn’t have to visit an office,” he said, adding that services would soon be accessible via WhatsApp, supported by a payment gateway through a partnership with Meta.
