A sea of blue filled the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal on Wednesday as thousands of fans turned up to watch India take on the West Indies, marking the return of international cricket to Hyderabad after a gap of two years.

Unlike the sea of orange that characterises Indian Premier League (IPL) matches featuring Sunrisers Hyderabad, the stadium was awash with blue as spectators arrived wearing Indian team jerseys, carrying flags and cheering for the home side.

As the sun began to set, crowds gathered outside the stadium, with many arriving by public transport and getting off near the venue. Despite traffic restrictions, vehicular movement continued around the stadium as spectators made their way towards the entry gates. The match also drew people who were still hoping to secure tickets.

At several gates, spectators were seen asking for additional tickets for friends and family members after managing to purchase only a limited number online. “I was not aware of the first phase of online ticket sales and missed it. During the second phase, I tried to buy the ₹900 tickets but could get only two, while I needed four. So, I am trying my luck here,” said Supreeth, who was looking for additional tickets.

“We have been wanting to see the Indian team come and play in Hyderabad for a long time now. There is just a different feeling when you come for an India match,” said Shekhar, who had come with his two children.

Other spectators hoped the return of international cricket would lead to more matches being allotted to the city. Seema, who had been looking forward to the fixture since the tournament schedule was announced, urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to consider Hyderabad for more international games.

“Ever since the schedule for this tournament was announced and we saw Hyderabad as the venue, we were happy and looking forward to attending the match. We request the BCCI to hold more international matches here,” she said.

Adding a cultural dimension to the sporting occasion, the Telangana Tourism Department organised a special programme at the stadium to showcase the State’s cultural heritage during the India-West Indies match. The programme featured Bathukamma, with traditional floral arrangements highlighting the festival’s association with nature, community and local traditions. Folk artistes also performed during the event.
