To mark World Sight Day, the Sankar Foundation eye hospital in Srikakulam conducted a glaucoma awareness programme for elderly persons in on Thursday .

Dr. K. Ramchran who conducted tests for the patients at the hospital said: “Blurred and low vision, constant headache, especially in the eyes are symptoms of glaucoma, a common disease among the elderly.” He added that the disease is prevalent among the middle-aged individuals and youth due to changes in their lifestyle.

Hospital managing trustee A. Krishna Kumar said that the Sankar Foundation had conducted 13, 738 tests for outpatients and completed nearly 2,674 surgeries for needy patients.

He said that the Foundation, which has hospitals in other places, had done 18,868 surgeries and ensured testing for 1,06, 776 persons between 1 April and 31 September, 2026. He said that special medical camps would be organised in Tekkali, Palasa, Sompeta, Ichchapuram and other places in the next two months to help poor patients get treatment in their vicinity. Deputy General Manager of the Foundation K. Bangar Raju said that the hospital was extending services free of cost to patients covered under NTR Vaidya Seva scheme.
