A list of 60 questions being posed as part of the Social and Educational Survey being conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes seems to be irritating those being enumerated, including politicians.

By the end of Sunday, of the total targeted 1.43 crore households in the State, 1.09 crore households have been covered. While the survey is scheduled to be completed by October 7 across Karnataka, the commission is yet to decide on the completion date in Greater Bengaluru Authority jurisdiction where it was started on Saturday.

Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna is learnt to have become irritable during the enumeration, and questioned the number of questions. Refusing to respond to all questions and terming many as ‘unscientific and illogical’, Mr. Somanna on Sunday said that the survey is being conducted to polarise castes for politics. The enumeration of his family is learnt to have taken an hour and four minutes, and he sarcastically asked enumerators to seek replies from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to fill in many columns. The BJP leader is learnt to have asked the enumerators to keep the questions simple.

Mr. Shivakumar, who was enumerated on Saturday, is also learnt to have got irritated with the questions. On Saturday, he told presspersons that he has told the enumerators not to ask certain personal questions to people in Bengaluru. “I have suggested to the enumerators not to ask people in Bengaluru about number of chicken or sheep that they own or personal details about washing machine or refrigerator,” he said.

Stating that despite opposition to the survey it would continue, he said that it was not right to oppose the survey since the court has made it clear that it was voluntary to respond to questions.

“In the past, people had pointed out that the old survey was not conducted properly. That is why a fresh survey is being conducted. I appeal to all to cooperate in the survey.”

On asked if the survey would be conducted in the next two to three days, Mr. Shivakumar said that the commission would take a call on the deadline.
