Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Hyderabad Zonal Unit, seized 6.53 kilograms of Indian pangolin scales in Hanamkonda, Telangana, during an operation on Saturday. Four persons allegedly involved in the illegal trade were apprehended.

Based on specific intelligence inputs, DRI officers mounted surveillance and conducted a day-long operation on October 4. The search led to the recovery of the pangolin scales, which officials said were sourced from about five Indian pangolins.

The Indian pangolin, scientifically known as Manis crassicaudata, is listed under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, which prohibits any form of trade or possession. Internationally, the species is protected under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Officials noted that pangolins are among the most trafficked mammals in the world, mainly hunted for their scales, which are sold in international markets, particularly in China and Southeast Asia, for use in traditional medicines.

The seized scales were taken under the provisions of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, and the four accused were detained. Both the accused and the seized items were handed over to the Forest Range Officer, Hanamkonda, for further investigation.
