Three months after an unprecedented deluge killed almost 50 people, an Assam district has been put on alert after a landslide upstream of the Dikhow river in adjoining Nagaland.

The same river caused much of the disaster in Assam’s Sivasagar, Charaideo, and parts of Jorhat district in June.

The landslide occurred on Wednesday (September 30, 2026) between Yongshei in Longleng district and Yaongyimsen in Mokokchung district, Nagaland officials said. Longleng Deputy Commissioner W. Manpai Phom said the landslide blocked about 80% of Dikhow, leaving 20% of it flowing.

District authorities have been coordinating with their Nagaland counterparts to avert any disaster, Sivasagar District Commissioner Mridul Yadav told journalists on Thursday (October 1, 2026).

“Our officials contacted some downstream villages, and residents said they did not observe any unusual changes in the flow of the Dikhow or any decline in water levels,” he said.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and updating on the river’s water level regularly,” Mr. Yadav said.

Residents along the Dikhow, particularly in Bihubar, have been advised to remain alert, follow official advisories, keep essential emergency supplies ready, and stay informed through government channels. Bihubar bore the impact of the flash floods in June.
