The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leaders on Monday said that they would be fielding strong candidates with winning prospects in all the wards of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and claimed that winning the civic elections was a matter of prestige
The announcement was made at a meeting of the GVMC coordination committee held at the district party office in the city under the leadership of district party president K.K. Raju. MLC Botcha Satyanarayana, party regional coordinator Kurasala Kannababu; former MLAs, and coordinators Tippala Srinivas, Devan Reddy, Molli Apparao, and Botcha Anusha attended.
The leaders recalled that the YSRCP government had accorded top priority to Visakhapatnam’s development and public welfare during its tenure. They alleged that the present alliance government was not paying attention to the city’s development and the administration of the GVMC.
They expressed concern over the acute drinking water crisis, criticising the unprecedented situation where water is being supplied only once every three or four days. While the water situation has temporarily improved due to rains, they urged the government to come forward with a long-term plan to ensure drinking water security for the city’s residents in the future.
The party demanded that the government maintain complete transparency regarding valuable government lands and assets in Visakhapatnam. The meeting expressed concern over the environmental destruction occurring in the areas surrounding Visakhapatnam. They stated that the government machinery has a responsibility to halt activities such as hill excavation and illegal mining.
They urged for the preservation of the environmental, historical, and spiritual significance of areas like Panchadarla Hill, Bavikonda, and Simhachalam Hill.
The party demanded complete transparency from officials regarding the delimitation of wards in the Visakhapatnam corporation. Party leaders pointed out that significant disparities in voter numbers across divisions have raised suspicions that ward boundaries were determined to serve political interests, rather than considering factors such as public representation, geographical connectivity, and social cohesion.
They urged that the ward delimitation process be carried out by taking factors such as administrative convenience and population balance into account. They stated that they are already consulting legal experts on this matter and are prepared to wage a legal battle, if necessary, to safeguard the rights of the people.
