Wind energy generation picks up in Tamil Nadu

Capacity utilisation of wind mills installed in Tamil Nadu is expected to be 29.6 % in 2025-2026 financial year, which is the highest since 2018-2019.

Wind energy generation in 2025-2026 is projected to be 10,104 million units as against 7,407 million units last fiscal. It was high at 9,132 million units in 2017-2018. The generation is certainly better than last year, said A.D.Thirumoorthy, Chief Technical Advisor of the Indian Wind Power Association.

According to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers’ Association, on September 28, the wind energy evacuated in the State was 87.60 million units which was slightly low.

Wind energy evacuation had decreased slightly probably because curtailment of generation was reported in several areas. The energy generation forecast was 87.74 million units while the actual evacuation was 87.60 million units.

With more than 10,000 MW of installed wind energy capacity in the State, wind energy generation this year has seen significant improvement. The State sees high wind energy generation between May and October every year, say industry sources.

According to forecast data available, the generation may see a dip till October 8 and pick up after that.

The Association said demand for energy was also seeing an uptick giving hope for better evacuation. On September 28, the demand met improved and was at 366.95 MUs, in spite of partly cloudy weather and scattered heavy rain at many places, it said.
