KGMCTA holds candlelight protests across all medical colleges

The faculty of government medical colleges in the State, under the banner of the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA), organised candlelight marches across all medical colleges on Friday evening to protest against the government’s neglect of the demands raised by doctors.

In a statement here, the KGMCTA said that it had been forced to adopt the path of agitation as the government had been ignoring their demands regarding the correction of anomalies in pay revision and the need to create adequate faculty posts for the past five years. The government has been quite dismissive about the assurances that it has been giving the KGMCTA regarding their demands and this cannot go on for long, the association said in the statement.

Though there have been two Cabinet meetings after the KGMCTA started their protest and non-cooperation, the issue of creating necessary posts in new medical colleges was never taken up for discussion, it pointed out.

The Kerala Medical PG Association and the House Surgeons’ Association also participated in the protests held on Friday.

On October 6, the faculty will stage dharnas in all government medical colleges for an hour from 1 p.m. till 2 p.m.

The KGMCTA said that it would be forced to intensify its agitation, including staying away from work if the government continues to ignore the issues raised by the doctors.
