With the drinking water shortage persisting in the city, residents near T.D. Road, Kochi, protested in front of the Kerala Water Authority’s (KWA) office on Monday (September 14, 2026), seeking an urgent resolution.
According to K.S. Dilip Kumar, president of T.D. Road Citizens Welfare Association, more than 100 families living in the T.D. Road premises have been affected with a drinking water crisis for the past one month.
“Most of these people are senior citizens, and they find it so hard to manage the situation. Even those who have wells cannot rely on that water for drinking purposes,” said Mr. Kumar.
According to him, despite repeated requests by the residents to the water utililty, the issue hasn’t been resolved, which prompted them to carry out a dharna in front of the office.
Mr. Kumar said that the bursting of the Thammanam tank has contributed to the present crisis. “Post the partial collapse of the tank, several regions of Kochi have been affected by a drinking water crisis, including ours,” he said.
Sources at KWA said that the issue has come to their notice and will be rectified soon. “We believe that there are some leakage issues in the region. There is no shortage of water, but the leaks could be the reason for the crisis This will be rectified on a priority basis,” said a KWA source.
Mr. Kumar said that if the issue is not addressed, then they would go ahead with more such sit-in protests.
