The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Saturday (August 29, 2026) said five out of the 16 people from the State reported missing after the devastating flash flood in Nepal were safe.
Among the 11 still missing are a retired Gauhati University professor, her husband, and a doctor of the Nalbari Medical College and Hospital in western Assam.
“Family members have confirmed that Pankaj Barman and Samar Bezbaruah of Nalbari district’s Arora village, and Shiva Marak, Sarbison Marak, and Elipson Sangma of West Karbi Anglong’s Satgaon area are safe,” an ASDMA spokesperson said.
A third from Arora village, Arun Mahanta, and a fourth from the Satgaon area, Birson Sangma, remained untraced.
Late Friday (August 28, 2026), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the State government had identified 12 people from Assam who remained untraced after the tragedy struck northern Nepal’s Rasuwagadhi at around 8.35 Indian Standard Time on August 26, 2026. The ASDMA updated the list on Saturday (August 29, 2026).
“Efforts are underway to establish contact with the missing people and ensure their safe rescue,” he said.
According to a list of missing people the Chief Minister shared, three — Rhituopurno Brahma, Montri Basumatary, and Soneswar Narzary — are from Daidak village in Karbi Anglong district. Rahul Daimary from Golaghat district’s Jaipukhuri village, Shatadal Nath from Hojai district’s Doboka town, and Tirtha Chaliha, a doctor from Nalbari district’s Ghograpar, are also on the list.
The remaining three are from Guwahati. They are Pankaj Naug from the Rukminigaon locality and Dipali Sarkar and her husband, Manash Kumar Ghosh, from the Lankeshwar area of the State capital.
Ms. Sarkar retired as the head of Gauhati University’s Physics Department. She and her husband were part of a 32-member group that was travelling to Kailash-Manasarovar in Tibet. Their Kolkata-based tour organiser said it lost contact with the travellers soon after the disaster struck Rasuwagadhi.
