Chief Election Commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, on Thursday said Booth Level Officers (BLOs) serve as the backbone of democracy.

At the Election Commission of India’s regional conference on “ELC & ECINET” held in Chennai, he addressed nearly 1,000 students and educators, and interacted with around 500 Booth Level Officers.

The conference was organised to boost youth participation and enhance ground-level election preparedness across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Addressing the interactive session with the 500 BLOs, the Chief Election Commissioner highlighted their crucial role in the elections.

Mr Kumar told journalists Booth Level Officers act as the foundation of democracy and emphasized their vital contribution in maintaining accurate, error-free voter lists.

Around 1,000 delegates representing 300 schools, 75 colleges, and 25 universities from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry also took part in the conference. An interactive session with the participants was held during the afternoon session of the event.
