The Cochin University Employees Association has criticised the decision of the Syndicate of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) to restrict the university’s official Onam celebrations to a single designated day.
The decision was taken at the first meeting of the reconstituted Syndicate on August 14. In a release, the association said Onam celebrations were held over several days at various government institutions, including the Secretariat and collectorates, as well as at other educational institutions, taking into account the convenience of different offices, departments and sections.
The decision to restrict the celebrations to a single day affected the practice traditionally followed by different sections and organisations of the university, which held celebrations on different days to facilitate wider participation by the university community.
The university authorities said the Syndicate had decided to hold the Onam celebrations on a single day as part of an effort to streamline events associated with the festival. Instead of various departments holding celebrations on different days, the intention was to hold them on a single day, they said.
