The Tamil film industry is heading towards a fresh standoff, with the Tamil Film Producers Council and Tamil Film Active Producers Association announcing that new Tamil films will not be released in theatres from September 1, 2026.
The decision comes amid a dispute with theatre owners and distributors over the proposed eight-week theatrical-to-OTT window.
Tamil film bodies announce theatre release stoppage
In a joint statement, the producers’ bodies said the decision follows a move by the Tamil Nadu Theatre Distributors Association and Theatre Owners Association to introduce new conditions for the release and subsequent OTT premiere of Tamil films.
According to the statement, the theatre owners and distributors have decided that, from September 1, new Tamil films should be released on OTT only after completing eight weeks in theatres. They have also decided not to provide advance payments for new films.
Producers object to decision taken without consultation
The producers’ bodies said the new terms were decided without discussions with the Tamil Film Producers Council, Tamil Film Active Producers Association or other industry associations.
The producers said they cannot accept what they described as a unilateral decision by the distributors and theatre owners without consultation with the producers.
The disagreement has now led the producers’ bodies to announce that new Tamil films will not be released in theatres from September 1.
Shooting and post-production work to stop
The impact of the dispute could extend beyond theatrical releases. According to the joint statement, shooting and post-production work related to Tamil films will also be stopped from September 1.
The producers’ bodies have urged the Tamil Nadu government to intervene and help resolve the dispute.
