The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is reopening a scheme which offers applicants in the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category a concession with respect to the expenses for shifting overhead power lines for construction of houses under LIFE Mission housing scheme.
As per an August 19 order, the KSEB has extended the scheme up to March 31, 2027, and has extended the benefit to beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-LIFE (PMAY-LIFE) scheme as well.
In August 2025, the KSEB had issued orders for meeting the expenditure, up to a maximum of ₹50,000 per case, from its own funds for shifting of 11 kV and low-tension (LT) lines and electric posts that hindered the construction of houses under the LIFE housing scheme.
The six-month scheme, open to applicants from the BPL category, expired on February 16, 2026. The decision to reopen the scheme and extend it was taken on the basis of a direction from Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph. The KSEB Director (Distribution) also had recommended that beneficiaries covered under PMAY-LIFE Mission be treated on par with LIFE Mission beneficiaries for the concession.
The power utility has also decided to consider cases where the applicant lacks absolute ownership, but the land is owned by another family member included in the same ration card for the concession.
