Two constables attached to Tiruvannamalai East Police Station in Tiruvannamalai town were arrested and later suspended on the charges of raping a 19-year-old woman in the early hours of Tuesday.

The constables were identified as Suresh Raj and Sunder. Initial inquiry revealed that along with her sister, the victim, a native of Andhra Pradesh, came in a goods-laden truck to deliver a consignment of vegetables and fruits to the common market in Tiruvannamalai town.

As they were returning home on the bypass Road, the vehicle was stopped at the junction in Endal village on the outskirts of Tiruvannamalai town by the two constables for regular verification of vehicle documents. The constables then took the young woman to a secluded spot and raped her, police said. Later, the constables left the spot. The incident occurred past midnight.

“The two constables were working at Tiruvannamalai East police station for over a year. It was from the government hospital authorities, we were informed about the crime,” a senior police officer told The Hindu.

Police said the victim managed to reach the Bypass Road where a few residents of Endal village helped her to reach the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai town for medical examination.

Following the incident, G. Dharmarajan, DIG (Vellore range); M. Sudhakar, SP (Tiruvannamalai); and V. Satish Kumar, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Tiruvannamalai, inspected the spot and conducted an inquiry. A case was registered by Tiruvannamalai All Women Police (AWPS).

After producing before a local court, arrested constables were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. Police said that based on the inquiry report, two constables have been suspended.
