The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP), which operates two 1,000 MW VVER reactors, with four more reactors of similar capacity under construction with assistance from Russia, has so far generated 1,30,627 million units of power since its commissioning.
Addressing the Independence Day celebrations held at Anu Vijay Township on Saturday, KKNPP Site Director Ashok Bhatia said the current operational capacity factor of KKNPP Reactors 1 and 2 exceeded 101.5%.
Reactor 2 recently established a new station record for continuous operation, surpassing the previous record of 638 days held by Reactor 1. While Reactor 1 was commissioned on October 22, 2013, Reactor 2 began commercial power generation in October 15, 2016.
As on June 30, 2026, the KKNPP’s first two reactors had generated 1,30,627 million units of electricity, thereby preventing 11.22 crore tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
On the progress achieved in the construction of Reactors 3 to 6, Mr. Bhatia said the KKNPP recently achieved the major commissioning milestone of ‘Spillage to Open Reactor’ in Reactor 3, alongside the commissioning of various systems and equipment. Recently, the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) was successfully erected inside the reactor cavity of the building where Reactor 5 is housed.
Mr. Bhatia added that the KKNPP had so far spent ₹155.33 crore on infrastructure development in the villages around the site under its corporate social responsibility programme.
