The Karnataka government has constituted the Urban Mobility Mission Committee for Bengaluru (UMMCB) under the chairmanship of Home Minister Priyank Kharge to bring various government agencies, private mobility operators, technology companies, experts, and citizen groups onto a common platform to tackle the city’s growing traffic and mobility challenges.
According to an order issued by the government on Saturday (August 8), the committee has been formed to develop an integrated, efficient, sustainable, and technology-driven urban mobility system for Bengaluru. The committee will include additional chief secretaries and senior officers of departments concerning urban mobility.
The committee will focus on integrating public and private transport, first- and last-mile connectivity, and pedestrian infrastructure while using data-driven interventions to reduce congestion.
The committee also envisages preparing a unified Bengaluru Mobility Action Plan, identifying congestion-prone roads and junctions, developing a Bengaluru Mobility Dashboard, and establishing a data-sharing system. It will also work on pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and connectivity around metro, bus, and suburban railway stations.
“The city’s rapid growth has resulted in worsening traffic congestion, longer travel times, inadequate first- and last-mile connectivity, parking problems, uncoordinated public transport systems, and increasing pressure on road space,” the government order said, adding that it was also affecting the city’s productivity, economic efficiency, and quality of life of citizens.
Seven working groups constituted
Seven working groups have been constituted to focus on traffic management and road safety, public transport integration, first- and last-mile connectivity, corporate and technology cluster mobility, digital mobility and data, urban freight and delivery mobility, and infrastructure and roadworks coordination.
The UMMCB will meet every three months, while its working groups will meet quarterly. Progress reports will be submitted every three months, with an annual report to be submitted to the State government.
Private players in the mix
A wide range of private mobility and logistics players have also been brought into the institutional framework as representatives of Namma Yatri, MoveInSync, Uber, Rapido, and Ola will be part of the committee. It will also include hotel, school, and college associations, autorickshaw and taxi associations, employee transport services, and parking technology companies.
Delivery and logistics companies will also be part of the committee. Technology and employment hubs, including the Outer Ring Road Companies Association, Manyata Tech Park, Whitefield, Electronic City, ITPL/ITPB, Bagmane Tech Park, and Embassy Tech Village, will also have representatives on the committee.
IISc, IIIT-B, and IIMB, besides civil society organisations working on road safety and sustainable transport, have also been included.
Working in coordination
“The key objective of this mission is to bring all relevant institutions, the private sector, technology companies, experts, and citizens onto a common platform and develop comprehensive solutions instead of taking isolated measures to address Bengaluru’s mobility challenges,” Mr. Kharge said.
“The committee will also work on improving commuter safety, reliability, and connectivity and developing solutions for major employment hubs such as the ORR, Manyata Tech Park, Whitefield, and Electronic City,” he added.
