Leaders of the Student Federation of India (SFI) expressed deep concern on Saturday over the deaths of four students who had ended their lives within a span of just two days in the State.
The federation’s State president P. Rammohan and State secretary K. Prasanna Kumar, in a press release, also demanded stringent action against those responsible for the death of GSL Medical College student Priyanka, who was allegedly knocked down by a vehicle in Rajamahendravaram.
Raising serious concern over what they described as the increasing number of suicides among students in the State, they alleged that the conduct and the functioning of the managements of educational institutions were major contributing factors.
Pointing to the Supreme Court’s 2025 judgment in the Sukhdev case, which directed educational institutions with more than 100 students to appoint counsellors and establish committees to receive and address student complaints, they alleged that these guidelines were not being implemented by colleges and that the government’s response had largely been limited to announcements and committee formations without effective enforcement.
Citing reports suggesting that efforts were being made to protect those responsible for the death of the medical student Priyanka, they demanded stringent action against those responsible and urged the government to ensure justice to the girl’s family.
