Karnataka has recorded crop damage over 8.60 lakh hectares (ha) this year due to excessive rainfall and floods. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will conduct an aerial survey of flood-affected areas on Tuesday, after which the government will finalise relief measures, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, the Minister said  that ongoing rains may increase the extent of crop loss. Once the land dries, Deputy Commissioners will carry out joint surveys to assess the full impact. “Through the aerial survey, the Chief Minister will examine losses caused by floods and heavy rainfall, and relief will be provided accordingly,” he said.

Excess rainfall

While some districts in the State have recorded more than 4% excess rainfall compared to normal, others have received below-average rains. Districts such as Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Yadgir, and Raichur received excess rainfall between August and September, leading to floods in areas along the Krishna and Bhima rivers, which caused extensive crop loss. However, there have been no reports of loss of life. Malnad and coastal districts, as well as parts of Southern Karnataka, have recorded deficient rainfall this year, the Minister said.

For immediate relief, the Deputy Commissioners have ₹1,385 crore in their accounts. Temporary measures are in place for affected families, with around 75 relief centres operational, providing shelter, food, and essential supplies to 8,919 people, he said.

Opposition woke up late

Taking a swipe at the Opposition, the Minister said that BJP leaders had so far remained quiet and are only now beginning to visit the flood-hit areas. “It looks like they have just woken up from sleep,” he remarked.

Responding to a question on the BJP’s announcement that its leaders would visit the affected areas on Tuesday, he said: “We and our officials have been on the ground for over a month, working for the protection and relief of people hit by floods and heavy rains. The Opposition seems to have just woken up. Since they are in the Opposition, let them do their inspections. We have no objection. Ultimately, it should benefit the people.”
