Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrated in Belagavi

Officers and personnel of the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre celebrated the Kargil Vijay Diwas in Belagavi on Sunday (July 26).

Brigadier Girish Upadhya, Commandant, MLIRC, and other officers inaugurated the event through a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial. They also paid homage to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during the Kargil War of 1999.

Wreaths were also laid by Sandeep Khot, Centre Subedar Major and Agniveer Vivek Khedekar, symbolising the Regiment’s enduring legacy of valour and the seamless passing of the spirit of service from one generation of soldiers to the next.

The ceremony honoured their unparalleled courage, unwavering dedication and selfless service, which ensured India’s victory in one of the most challenging high-altitude conflicts in military history.

The occasion also recalled the distinguished contribution of The Maratha Light Infantry Regiment, whose gallant soldiers etched the Regiment’s name in golden letters through their exemplary courage during the Kargil conflict. The ceremony was attended by officers, JCOs, other ranks and Agniveers of the Regimental Centre, who paid solemn tributes to the fallen heroes and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the highest traditions of the Indian Army, inspired by the courage, patriotism and supreme sacrifice of the Kargil warriors, said a press release.

In Davangere, Prabha Mallikarjun, MP, released the book ‘Kargil Yuddha: A Critical Turning Point’, a Kannada translation of the English work by retired Colonel M.B. Ravindranath of Holesirigere village. She said as part of the celebrations, she had purchased copies of the book from the proceeds of her salary. “The book will be distributed to the libraries of government schools and government colleges in Davangere Lok Sabha constituency. As the entire amount received from the purchase of these books will go to the Soldiers’ Welfare Fund, this is a tribute to our brave soldiers. I am confident that through this book, our students will understand the Kargil victory story and will be inspired to adopt the values ​​of patriotism, sacrifice, bravery and national service in their lives,’’ she said.

In Bagalkot, the event was celebrated by members of the district unit of the All Karnataka Ex-Servicemen’s Association. They took out a bike rally from the association’s office to various roads in the city. District president Gadigeppa Arakeri, honorary president Arjun Kori, general secretary Vegananda, organiSing secretary Manjunath Chittaragi, Yamanappa Yalagannavar and others were present.
