Filmmaker Vinayan has asked whether actor Shwetha Menon is “ready to request” the government to resume the investigation into the Hema Committee report that probed the problems faced by women in Malayalam cinema.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Mr. Vinayan said he has come across reports that appeared online in which Ms. Menon had spoken against “a power group” in Malayalam cinema.

Ms. Menon, who had retracted her earlier decision to resign as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), had issued a social media post on Tuesday claiming that her fight was against “the power group” in Malayalam cinema mentioned in the Hema Committee report. She had stated that she would not allow those facing such allegations to assume leadership roles in the actors’ body.

Welcoming her statement, Mr. Vinayan said that nobody in the association has yet supported the Hema Committee report or demanded that its full version be made public. He asked whether Ms. Menon was ready to “initiate sincere action against the power group” as the members of her own association had opposed it earlier.

He alleged that “this power group” had blocked his career for nearly 10-12 years and banned a prominent actor like Thilakan from the industry. This was mentioned from pages 141 to 144 of the report, which was drafted after incurring an expense of about ₹1 crore taken from the taxpayers’ money, he said.
