In Kerala, the teacher-student ratio is 1:30 for Classes I to V and 1:35 for Classes VI to VIII. An additional division is created if the number of students exceeds 30 by even one in lower primary and 35 by even one in upper primary.
Additional posts were sanctioned in 53 government and aided schools in Kerala during staff fixation in the academic years from 2023-24 to 2025-26 even when just one additional student took admission in a class.
The posts were sanctioned from primary to high school classes.
Teacher-student ratio
In the State, the teacher-student ratio is 1:30 for Classes I to V and 1:35 for Classes VI to VIII. An additional division is created if the number of students exceeds 30 by even one in lower primary and 35 by even one in upper primary.
However, in Classes IX and X where the teacher-student ratio is 1:45, an additional division is created only if the 51st student takes admission and a third only if the 96th student takes admission.
A few years ago, the Directorate of General Education had proposed that the Kerala Education Rules be amended so that a second teacher post is created only if there is an increase of six students in lower primary. In Classes VI to VIII, it was recomended that one division be created for up to 40 students, and two for students between 41 and 75, three if it is between 76 and 110.
District-wise posts
Among the posts created, six upper primary school teacher posts—five in aided schools and one in a government school—were sanctioned in Thiruvananthapuram. Three of these were sanctioned in the 2023-24 academic year, one in 2024-25, and two in 2025-26.
In Kollam, of the three posts sanctioned, two were in government schools and one in aided. All were sanctioned in the 2025-26 academic year. Two were of lower primary schoolteachers and one of a high school physical science teacher.
An upper primary schoolteacher post was sanctioned in the government sector in Pathanamthitta.
In Alappuzha, five posts were sanctioned in government sector and four in aided schools, while in Idukki two were sanctioned in aided schools and one in the government sector. Three of these were of lower primary teacher and two of upper primary teachers.
Three posts were approved in aided schools and one in a government school in Thrissur, while three were sanctioned in government schools and one in an aided school in Malappuram. One post sanctioned in Wayanad in 2025-26 was in a government school at Mananthavady.
In Kozhikode, all five posts were sanctioned in government schools, with two each of upper primary and high school teachers and one of a lower primary teacher. In Kannur, in the 2025-26 academic year, four posts were sanctioned, all in aided schools.
Kasaragod district had the maximum number of such posts—13. All but one of these were in government schools. Two were of lower primary and six of upper primary schoolteachers, and five of high school teachers.
No additional posts were sanctioned in Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Palakkad.
