1. SC dismisses plea to restrain TVK leaders’ remarks on Karur stampede
The Supreme Court today (July 7, 2026) said restraining Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leaders from making public statements linking political rivals with the Karur stampede may amount to an injunction on “free speech.”
The court advised the Opposition DMK to counter such statements with “more speech”, rather than seek a judicial gag.
The remarks by a Bench headed by Justice K.V. Viswanathan came during the hearing of an application filed by DMK Organising Secretary R.S. Bharathi, alleging that TVK leaders including Aadhav Arjuna, were publicly making false accusations of criminal liability and issuing “threats” against political opponents in connection with the Karur stampede.
2. Crack in railway track slows down operation of suburban trains
Hundreds of office-goers using the suburban train services on the Tambaram-Beach section in Chennai faced hardship after a crack in the railway track near Nungambakkam railway station resulted in trains being operated with speed restrictions.
3. Government pleader appointments being made transparently: Law Minister
Tamil Nadu Minister for Law R. Nirmalkumar said the allegations of irregularities in the appointment of government pleaders in lower courts were baseless and the appointments were being made in a transparent manner.
Speaking to journalists at Secretariat in Chennai, the Minister said false information was being spread alleging corruption in the appointment of government pleaders in lower courts in the State. “Those claims were not true. District Collectors are scrutinising the profiles of applicants and conducting thorough background verification,” he said.
4. MoU inked with Hitachi for expansion projects in Porur, Chengalpattu
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Tamil Nadu government and Hitachi Energy Technology Services Private Limited in the presence of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat in Chennai for the expansion of Hitachi’s facility at Porur and Hitachi Energy India Limited’s facility at Chengalpattu.
5. Online registration of select documents to be launched in State
Tamil Nadu Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration D. Logesh Tamilselvan said online registration of specific documents from anywhere, at any time, for the public and builders will begin on August 17.
These documents include first sale of plots and flats, sale deeds relating to the Tamil Nadu Housing Board, and memoranda of deposit of title deeds (MODs).
