Gas pipeline leak during roadwork in Kerala capital sparks panic

A gas pipeline leak triggered concern in the Kerala capital after an underground pipeline was accidentally ruptured during roadwork on Tuesday (July 14, 2026).

The leak, which occurred on the KIMS Road at Kumarapuram, was soon brought under control by Fire and Rescue Services personnel who rushed to the spot. Officials have confirmed that there is presently no danger to the public.

The pipeline is being laid by THINK Gas as part of the City Gas project.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place while an activity by the Public Works Department (PWD) was underway. An earthmover engaged in excavation work reportedly struck the underground CNG pipeline and caused the rupture, which led to the leak.

Damaged section sealed

Fire and Rescue Services teams soon rushed to the scene and initiated emergency steps to contain the leak. The valve supplying gas to the affected section of the pipeline was immediately shut to prevent further gas flow. The damaged section was subsequently sealed and the leak was fully stopped.

Police sources said residents in the immediate vicinity were evacuated and traffic along the busy KIMS Hospital stretch was temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety. Gas supply through the affected pipeline has also been temporarily halted.

Residents protest

The incident sparked protests from local residents, who have questioned the safety standards followed during the installation of the pipeline.

One resident alleged that the pipeline had not been laid at the prescribed depth below the road surface. “The pipeline should have been laid nearly six feet underground, but instead it is almost on the surface. It is not even one foot below the ground. It could break again if a vehicle passes over it,” he said. The protesters demanded a comprehensive investigation into the issue.

The residents also expressed concern that the leak was resolved only through a temporary repair by shutting the valve and sealing the damaged section. They called for a permanent solution to ensure that similar incidents do not recur.
