A new medicine outpatient division has been opened at Pulayanarkotta Chest Diseases hospital as an extension of the General Medicine OP at the Government Medical College. This is one of the steps being taken by the government to reduce overcrowding at the MCH and to ensure that patients do not end up lying on the floor.

The government has taken a policy decision that patients would not be accommodated on the floor in public hospitals, Health Minister, K. Muraleedharan, said here on Saturday, while inaugurating the seventh unit of the General Medicine department

Patients admitted under the General Medicine department at the Medical College who are not in a serious condition, and for whom no bed is available at the hospital, will be transferred to Pulayanarkotta hospital. About 200 beds are being planned under Unit 7 of the General Medicine department at Pulayanarkotta. In the first phase, 100 beds have been readied. Patients who need to be given medicines and have to be monitored will be accommodated here. Patients can also come to Pulayanarkotta directly to consult in the General Medicine OP. Two ambulances have also been readied for transferring patients from MCH to Pulayanarkotta.

Mr. Muraleedharan said that he would speak with the KSRTC authorities on arranging bus facility for people to go from Medical College to Pulayanarkotta. He said that steps will be taken to reduce overcrowding in other medical colleges also and that the service of doctors would be re-arranged depending on the number of patients. All idling facilities would be identified and utilised appropriately.

V. Muraleedharan, MLA, KV Vishwanathan, Director of Medical Education and medical college authorities were present.
