The Supreme Court on Friday (September 26, 2025) issued notice on a batch of petitions alleging opacity in the conduct of the NEET-PG 2025 examination, particularly with respect to the disclosure of answer keys and evaluation protocols.
A Bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Viswanathan directed the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences to file its response within two weeks. The judges, however, questioned why only 20 candidates had approached the court from among the over two lakh students who appeared for the examination on August 3.
“Out of two lakh students who appeared, why do a handful of students have complaints to make?” Justice Pardiwala asked.
The counsel for the petitioners submitted that the intention was not to stall the counselling process, but stressed that the non-disclosure of answer keys would adversely affect a large number of students.
However, Justice Pardiwala urged candidates to prioritise academics over litigation. “You should get out of all this litigation. Concentrate on your studies… stand on your own merit”, he said.
The pleas argued that the new mechanism for releasing answer keys was “opaque, unintelligible and incapable of meaningful verification”. They also sought directions to permit candidates to challenge disputed questions or answers and to mandate transparent evaluation mechanisms in future examinations.
Earlier, the court had directed the exam to be conducted in a single shift instead of two shifts. “We direct that necessary arrangements be made for holding the NEET-PG 2025 examination in one shift, duly ensuring that complete transparency is maintained and secure centres are identified and commissioned,” a three-judge Bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath had ordered.
