The Palarivattom police have informed actor Ansiba Hassan that they cannot register a case on a complaint filed by her against fellow actors Shwetha Menon and Lakshmipriya alleging an organised malicious campaign by them.

The police said they could not register a first information report as the allegations pertain to defamation alone.

“The police cannot initiate an inquiry into defamation. She has to move the court for an inquiry. We have conveyed the same to the complainant,” an officer said.

Ms. Hassan had lodged the complaint against Ms. Menon and Ms. Lakshmipriya, the president and vice-president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), in the last week of June following some alleged controversial remarks made by Ms. Lakshmipriya in an interview with an online channel. The Drishyam actor, in her complaint, had reportedly alleged that the interview was part of a smear campaign orchestrated by Ms. Menon and Ms. Lakshmipriya following the internal turmoil in AMMA.

The latest development comes even as the Hill Palace police and the Kadavanthra police have registered two cases based on Ms. Hassan’s complaints. The Hill Palace police have booked Ms. Lakshmipriya and a woman sub inspector, and the Kadavanthra police have registered FIRs against actor Tiny Tom in the cases. Both the cases were booked following court orders after the police initially refused to register FIRs.
