Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, on Wednesday, paid a surprise visit to the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (IOG) and Government Hospital for Women and Children at Egmore in Chennai.

At the century-old institute, Mr. Vijay visited the ward and the intensive care unit and enquired about the health of mothers undergoing treatment at the hospital. He also sought feedback from them on the treatment being provided and the facilities available there. Mr. Vijay held a few newborn infants in his arms.

Accompanied by Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare K.G. Arunraj and Health Secretary Darez Ahamed, the Chief Minister enquired about the medical services being provided at the hospital.

Speaking to reporters later, Dr. Arunraj said the Chief Minister had directed officials to chalk out a plan to develop the hospital into an integrated facility with all amenities. He acknowledged that complaints had been received about staff demanding bribes to show newborn infants to their families after delivery and said strict instructions had been issued to dismiss those found guilty. The public can lodge complaints through the 104 round-the-clock health helpline.
