A 28-year-old bike taxi rider, who allegedly stole gold ornaments worth ₹10 lakh from the house of his friend’s aunt after gaining her trust, was arrested by the Mehdipatnam police on Wednesday.

The accused was identified as Biyya Shashidhar, a resident of New Bowenpally, Secunderabad.

The theft came to light after Rajitha Srinivas Godari, 45, a resident of Masab Tank, lodged a police complaint on June 30 stating that gold ornaments had gone missing from her residence.

During the investigation, police found that Shashidhar, who was a friend of the complainant’s niece, frequently visited the house and had become familiar with its layout. Investigators alleged that he noticed where the valuables were kept in the almirah during his visits.

The accused later visited the house on the pretext of helping the complainant sell her car. While asking for the car keys, he entered a room, used the available keys to unlock the almirah and stole the gold ornaments.

According to investigators, Shashidhar later sold the stolen jewellery in the Secunderabad gold market and fled to Goa, where he spent part of the proceeds. He was arrested after returning to Hyderabad based on specific information.

Police recovered 157.8 grams of gold ornaments, a scooter and ₹12,000 cash from his possession. The total value of the recovered property is estimated at ₹10 lakh.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
